Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, more commonly known as ADHD, is a disorder that is thought to affects around 28% of children between 3 and 17 years of age. Whether you are a parent who chooses to use traditional medicine, in home strategies, or a mixture of both, you are aware that it can be a challenging process to provide your child with the best care. It is with this challenge in mind that The Tutoring Center in Wichita would like to offer a few suggestions

Healthy eating

Healthy eating is of course important for any child, but it is especially important for any children with a tendency towards hyperactivity and/or loss of focus. Try to limit sugary snacks, sodas and candies as much as possible, as these have been shown to contribute to attention problems. Aim to provide your child with a nourishing diet based around whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and healthy protein sources. If they deserve a sweet treat, try giving them fresh fruit or a yogurt popsicle!

All work and no play…

Physical activity is vital for children with seemingly limitless energy. Try to make sure that your child engages in at least one hour of physical activity a day. Aim for team sports that require constant motion (soccer or basketball, for example) rather than sports with a lot of ‘downtime’ (like softball). Remember, the goal is to use up as much energy as possible!

Rest

Getting enough good quality sleep can make a huge difference to your child’s mood and behaviour. To help your child sleep well, try spending time with them as they are going to sleep; you could read them a book or tell them a story as they lie in bed, for instance. If they have a lot of trouble getting to sleep, consider using a white noise generator as they have been shown to help calm and relax children with ADHD.

Unfortunately, studies indicate that children with ADHD may be more likely to experience bullying. Make sure you and your child know how to deal with bullies by following our guide.
