A Cleaning Lesson

As much as they may not enjoy the task, chores are an important lesson on responsibility for children to learn. Below is a post from The Tutoring Center, Wichita with some ideas on making these chores educational.

Time Management

Start off by including your child in your list-making process instead of presenting the list and plan to them when you are delegating their tasks. Include them in the process and teach them a valuable lesson in time-management.
  • As you make your list, share with your children any techniques or tips you use to ensure that you don’t forget any important items or tasks.
  • When it comes time to prioritize, teach your children how you decide which is the most important item and the factors included in your decisions.
  • While you estimate how long each task will take, vocalize your thoughts so that your children can learn about additional items you consider, such as preparation time and required resources.
  • When you are piecing it all together to get the most out of your cleaning time, enlist their help and take on any suggestions they have which can help.
This is not only a great hands-on lesson for children to learn, but it also provides a general framework for children to use at school when managing competing priorities.

Space and Rewards

If you include rewards for your children’s help, then this can also be used as a platform to teach. Ask your children for three types of realistic rewards they would like, such as a ride to and from the mall, choosing a dessert for a week, or a snack in their lunch for a month. Once you know these, assign them an amount of space to be cleaned. As an example, if your child wants a ride to the mall on the weekend, assign the reward to the task of cleaning 20 square feet of space. If they clean the space, they achieve the reward. The lesson in this tip is the calculations that your student will have to do. After all, measuring the space or the floor isn’t the same as the closet or small spaces on the ceiling where they cleaned up cobwebs.
